OK Boomer with Robert
Yes, we’re keeping it real! Because, every week we feature the latest Boomer news, Boomer brainteasers, Boomer fitness, Boomer nutrition (not cheeseburgers and fries), and Boomer history--As Mark Twain allegedly said ”History doesn’t repeat itself, but it DOES rhyme! 70-year-old Robert Rickman was born in the middle of the Boomer surge, recently contracted Covid19, and suffers from amusing bouts of brain fog while broadcasting LIVE from a local radio station in southern Illinois. Rickman spent decades in news broadcasting where announcers were formal and correct. Fortunately, Robert has broken this habit and makes the scene like a real person! Because Robert Rickman is...is...”Keepin’ it Real!”

OK Gang. Think about this. Some regulars at a local senior center weren’t seen for a while; they couldn't afford to pay for a meal. And we’re talking about a $4 meal ticket. Jill at Club 60 talks about an epidemic among seniors called “Food Insecurity.”
And do you remember the good old days when you suffered a minor injury and the only place to go was the emergency room. Nurse Sharon Lawless who has lived in this area for decades says things have changed…and for the better. We'll talk with Sharon about healthcare changes in a rural area.
We’ll also look at how Medicare might not pay ALL of your health related costs. And one of those costs might come from the Covid variant. Yes, Covid is still with us.
We’ll also look at that dratted technology...passwords on one side, and Kroger electronic coupons on the other. Then, we’ll take a walk for your brain.
That's next on OK Boomer, where we're "Keepin' it real!"

OK Gang….
Here’s a sobering thought. There are more senior citizens living this country than ever before, but funding for senior programs continues to drop…Janet Melvin from the Wit and Wisdom Senior Center talks about what she has seen during her decades of work at the center.
Now let's talk politics.
What happens when people with different political leanings meet in the great outdoors? Bev Shofstall of Free Again Wildlife Rehabilitation says people learn to get-along...mostly. And Beverly will also talk about a wilderness area in the Midwest.
Next, Bob Smith has a feature about a former five star General and president who warned about the "Military Industrial Complex".
Also on the podcast, we’ll examine an AARP report on fraud, a possible Alzheimer’s treatment called "comprehensive care," droughts and arsenic levels in drinking water, Medicare prescription drug transparency and exercise! Exercise might fight the cold and flu.

Let’s go back and think about our teenage years….when we went to the sock hop at the Junior High, or the teen center. But imagine what it be like to return to the that special place 60 years later.
Sandi Bullar is the person we're talking about and the director of a local senior citizens center. We’ll hear from Sandi.
Then we go to a nurse who has seen a big change in rural health in the past thirty years. And nurse Sharon Lawless tells us that the changes are good.
Then comes our movie review. No, it’s not a current movie, but one you might have seen as a kid. 12 O'clock High is about the first Americans who fought in Europe at the beginning of World War Two. Gregory Peck stars as Brigadier General Frank Savage from the 1949 film.
And we’ll cover unhealthy habits some of us have learned during Covid, and learn what Long Covid and can do to the brain.
Then we’ll examine a survey that shows half of the women in the US are struggling financially.
In other news...
Apparently, Americans want Congress to address family caregiving problems.
And a lack of healthcare workers worldwide has led to excess deaths.
Later, we’ll talk with Beverely Shofstall of Free Again Wildlife Rehabilitation.

We’ll start out maybe...with you, a fellow Boomer. Are listening to me by yourself, and spend most of your time that way? By yourself? Well, the Surgeon General recognizes this as a major problem in our country.
We'll hear from Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy talking about loneliness.
And, many of us feel lonely in our retirement, because too many Boomers retire to the TV set. Butttttttt...Boomer Bev Shopstall is different. Yes, she watches a lot of TV too...while she’s taking care of her babies.
Her "babies" are animals.
Bev and her husband rehabilitate animals. We’ll talk with Bev shortly.
Thennnnnnn,
There is that thing we did in our youth, and wish we could go back in time to stop it from ever happening in the first place such as like...ohhhhhh, tapping the high school principals phone and listening to the conversation on the school radio station…
Yup Principal Donald Trimble heard himself live on student station WRHS.
We’ll interegate the perpetrator.
And, do you believe that climate change is real? We’ll look at the stats.
We’ll examine two types of mental illness….COVID and psychosis and the Internet and dementia. Now THAT last story might surprise you.
But what won’t surprise you is Boomer obesity...because it’s all around us.

I was always contemptuous of shooting pool as a legitimate exercise. But I changed my mind after visiting a pool room in a senior citizens' center, where I learned that shooting pool, or Billiards is a first-rate exercise! Besides, shooting pool can divert your attention from worrying about the economy.
Professor of economics Kevin Sylvester talks about food prices, inflation, and what it's doing to the economy, post Covid.
Then Bob and Martia Smith tell us a about the form the Apollo Astronauts had to fill-out on their return to earth.
And we’ll examine Mark Twains alleged quote that history doesn’t repeat itself but does rhyme.
We’ll look at allergies down south and nationwide. And we’ll have some tips about how to avoid osteoporosis. Plus, Roger Ramjet tells us about a tune you might not have heard for awhile.

This is an EF4 tornado that hit a suburb of Nashville, TN in 2009 I was on the air at a Nashville news station with continuous coverage of the disaster most of the next day. It was horrible!
But as Mark Twain allegedly said, "History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme!
Fourteen years later history rhymed, but not only in Tennessee.

On this week's program...
A spilled cup of coffee during the broadcast resulted in fifteen exciting and unpredictable minutes on-the-air!
Also, the combined trust funds of Social Security are expected to run out by 2035, and Boomers are understandably worried about this. But economics professor Kevin Sylvester isn't worried, and he'll tell us why.
Turning to health. Yolonda Simon’s genes don’t look very good. Her mother and older sister died from Alzheimer's, and she has a younger sister who is suffering from it now. Yolanda, who is an Alzheimer’s Community Educator, talks about the disease, and her chances of getting it.
Then we go to the OK Boomer film critic...Robert Rickman who will screen an obscure but hilarious movie based on...waste baskets.

Some of us OK Boomers are asking people tooooooo….speak up. That’s because aging and hearing loss go together. But that's not the case for everyone because when the power goes out Diane Hardt pricks-up her ears.
We’ll talk with Diane about how noisy it is in the 21st Century compared to the 18-hundreds.
And in the wake of the pandemic we’ve all noticed prices climbing for nearly everything! But there is one place in a small rural community that’s keeping costs down….way down, says Celeste Williams.
.
We’ll join Celeste after she made a two dollar sale….to me at a local senior’s thrift store.
And speaking of sales! What do Boomers do with their already been-read books?
They donate them to Sahra Heyer, who operates a local gently used bookstore. We’ll be talking with Sahra about the book habits of seniors.
And….
We’ll feature scams aimed at seniors, health insurance expansion next year (we’ll explain) senior travel habits, processed food (some of it is actually good for you)….and more.

In this episode, we will hear from a Boomer...a first responder who came upon a scene of incredible death and destruction when he was in his twenties. And he stuffed this horrible memory for decades until...well the tragedy started in the air over San Diego in 1978.
Mark Twain allegedly said history doesn’t repeat itself but it does rhyme. Can you think of anything today that rhymed with the events of 100 years ago?
Edward R Murrow reports about the tragic presidency of Woodrow Wilson.
In this century, Ann Stalheber ran a farmer’s market last year, after retiring…and she's glad she did!
Keep busy...that’s the ticket. And we’ll also examine how keeping active in our leisure time, may delay or even prevent Dementia. And maybe so can coffee.
Then we come to the “Banana Scam” You know, when you’re at the self-checkout and select bananas for 44-cents a pound,...and scan a T-Bone steak?
Then there is Juice jacking. No, not fruit juice, but the juice that comes out of those USB chargers located in hotels and airports. Finally in a feew days you might experience the Social Security Stealth tax. Illegal….no

Mark Twain once allegedly said that history doesn’t repeat itself, but it does rhyme…
Phil Bredesen, the governor of Tennessee 14-years ago, predicted the shift of Tornado Alley to the east. You’ll hear what this shift did to a suburb of Nashville, TN. And it was the most miserable day Robert Rickman spent on the radio.
And imagine that you are not like other people...
and you need help but are afraid to...to...come out of the closet.
Becky Salazar of a local Area Agency on Aging talks about how her agency is helping people who are afraid to come out.
Then there is the question of retiring to a foreign country...
Pod-caster Marc Miller says you have to live like a local. Marc and Robert Zoomed together recently...Marc in Mexico and Yours truly in Illinois.
And in the segment, you’ll love to hate...
we’ll discuss illegal emails, phone calls and how scammers have found out how to hijack your smart TV….but leave it in your living room
Plus, the social security board of trustees has estimated in what year the combined trust funds will be depleted.
Finally must of us know that our muscles weaken with age..or maybe it’s not really the muscles.
