OK Boomer for 7-28-23

Tuesday Aug 01, 2023

Tuesday Aug 01, 2023

This month temperatures in many places nationwide are soaring into the 90’s and `100’s.  And one person is afraid that seniors may skimp on the air conditioning.
Becky Salazar will talk about Boomers, heat and confusion.  And, we’ll check the nation’s weather, hotspots that cover about 2/3's of the country.
Then we have a report of kids smoking in the parking lot...or, maybe they're not kids.
Nope they're Boomers.  And we needed to disguise the informants voice for his own safety.
We'll review a film about a miserable boss.  And this film makes the bosses portrayed in Office Space and 9-5 look like Mr. Rogers.
Then we'll examine one reason why some people don't believe in science, and some do.  How a cup of expresso might help to prevent Alzheimer's. And how so-called super Agers...someone who lives past 80 might...owe his or her long life to...nimbleness.
It's all next on OK Boomer, where we're, "Keepin' it Real!"

Do you know someone who has moved to another city...or state because of politics? Economics Professor John Jackson of the Paul Simon Public Policy Institute doesn’t expect this tribalism to end soon. But professor Jackson does offer a possible solution.
And what was it like for a Boomer substitute teacher after the kids came back to school in the wake of the pandemic?
Boomer Randy Mitchel is a substitute teacher in a rural area who talks about how people communicate post pandemic in the world of Smart phones and tablets.
I talked with Randy this week about how he handles HIS cell phone….
Then there is the story of an out of shape Boomer who has dived into fitness...only to burn out on it a year later.  23-year-old Alexis is a trainer at a local gym and has some advice for Boomers who want to get into shape...too fast.
And Edward R Murrow looks at the nation 100-years ago, and it will up to you spot the similarities with today.

It's all next on OK Boomer where....
"We're Keep'n it real."

A few weeks ago, I spotted a woman curled-up next to a plastic box of her things.  I think she was homeless.  And though I couldn’t see her face, she might have been a Boomer, because too many Boomers are retiring…to the streets.
Percussionist Kevin Lucas will be performing two fundraisers late this month for the homeless. We’ll hear from Keven later in the program.
Exercise! Walking on a treadmill texting on your Smart phone. Actually, some of us would rather text and skip the treadmill. But what would you think if there was someplace to walk where you could actually see interesting things?
In the middle of the pandemic Kristi Weaver organized a group called Shawnee Saunterers for those over 50. The group frequently saunter through Shawnee National Forest.  We’ll be talking with Kristi.
Plus we'll have the latest in Boomer news.  That's next. on OK Boomer, where we're "Keepin' it Real!"

OK Boomer for 7-7-23

Two years ago I visited a Senior Citizens Center for the first time. Why? Because at 68 I didn’t think I was old. It turns out other Boomers feel the same way according to Jill Graskowitzwho talks about her parents.
Jill runs a local senior center that is catering to the young-oldsters. She’ll be on in a few minutes.
Now let’s here is something that doesn’t make much sense….a rural area surrounded by farms BUT...with little access to fresh food.
Karen Jensen-Britton plans to put the farm on wheels….so to speak.
Then, we’ll look at how mental health was treated in our early childhoods…

Olivia De Haviland starred in one of the first films to treat mental illness seriously Snake Pit, made in 1948. We think you should see it again.

Speaking of mental health. We’ll discuss COVID and the brain., and it’s not good. A COVID vaccine initiative...that’s good. Coffee and the brain...even better. And we’ll have some stats about how big the Baby Boomer generation is in general, and what’s happening to us health-wise.

That's next on OK Boomer with Robert Rickman.
Where we're "Keepin' it real!"

OK Boomer 6-2-23

Monday Jun 05, 2023

OK Gang. Think about this. Some regulars at a local senior center weren’t seen for a while; they couldn't afford to pay for a meal. And we’re talking about a $4 meal ticket. Jill at Club 60 talks about an epidemic among seniors called “Food Insecurity.”
And do you remember the good old days when you suffered a minor injury and the only place to go was the emergency room. Nurse Sharon Lawless who has lived in this area for decades says things have changed…and for the better. We'll talk with Sharon about healthcare changes in a rural area.

We’ll also look at how Medicare might not pay ALL of your health related costs. And one of those costs might come from the Covid variant. Yes, Covid is still with us.
We’ll also look at that dratted technology...passwords on one side, and Kroger electronic coupons on the other. Then, we’ll take a walk for your brain.

That's next on OK Boomer, where we're "Keepin' it real!"

Tuesday May 30, 2023

OK Gang….
Here’s a sobering thought. There are more senior citizens living this country than ever before, but funding for senior programs continues to drop…Janet Melvin from the Wit and Wisdom Senior Center talks about what she has seen during her decades of work at the center.
Now let's talk politics.
What happens when people with different political leanings meet in the great outdoors? Bev Shofstall of Free Again Wildlife Rehabilitation says people learn to get-along...mostly.  And Beverly will also talk about a wilderness area in the Midwest.
Next, Bob Smith has a feature about a former five star General and president who warned about the "Military Industrial Complex".
Also on the podcast, we’ll examine an AARP report on fraud, a possible Alzheimer’s treatment called "comprehensive care," droughts and arsenic levels in drinking water, Medicare prescription drug transparency and exercise! Exercise might fight the cold and flu.

It's next on OK Boomer, where we're "Keep'n it real!"

OK Boomer for 5-19-23

Monday May 22, 2023

Monday May 22, 2023

Let’s go back and think about our teenage years….when we went to the sock hop at the Junior High, or the teen center. But imagine what it be like to return to the that special place 60 years later.
Sandi Bullar is the person we're talking about and the director of a local senior citizens center. We’ll hear from Sandi.
Then we go to a nurse who has seen a big change in rural health in the past thirty years. And nurse Sharon Lawless tells us that the changes are good.
Then comes our movie review. No, it’s not a current movie, but one you might have seen as a kid.  12 O'clock High is about the first Americans who fought in Europe at the beginning of World War Two. Gregory Peck stars as Brigadier General Frank Savage from the 1949 film.
And we’ll cover unhealthy habits some of us have learned during Covid, and learn what Long Covid and can do to the brain.
Then we’ll examine a survey that shows half of the women in the US are struggling financially.
In other news...
Apparently, Americans want Congress to address family caregiving problems.
And a lack of healthcare workers worldwide has led to excess deaths.
Later, we’ll talk with Beverely Shofstall of Free Again Wildlife Rehabilitation.
That's next on OK Boomer where "We're keepin' it real!"

OK Boomer 5-12-23

Monday May 15, 2023

Monday May 15, 2023

We’ll start out maybe...with you, a fellow Boomer. Are listening to me by yourself, and spend most of your time that way? By yourself? Well, the Surgeon General recognizes this as a major problem in our country.
We'll hear from Surgeon General Vivek H. Murthy talking about loneliness.
And, many of us feel lonely in our retirement, because too many Boomers retire to the TV set. Butttttttt...Boomer Bev Shopstall is different. Yes, she watches a lot of TV too...while she’s taking care of her babies.
Her "babies" are animals.
Bev and her husband rehabilitate animals. We’ll talk with Bev shortly.
Thennnnnnn,
There is that thing we did in our youth, and wish we could go back in time to stop it from ever happening in the first place such as like...ohhhhhh, tapping the high school principals phone and listening to the conversation on the school radio station…
Yup Principal Donald Trimble heard himself live on student station WRHS.
We’ll interegate the perpetrator.
And, do you believe that climate change is real? We’ll look at the stats.
We’ll examine two types of mental illness….COVID and psychosis and the Internet and dementia. Now THAT last story might surprise you.
But what won’t surprise you is Boomer obesity...because it’s all around us.

It's all next on OK Boomer!  Where we're keepin' it Real!

Monday May 15, 2023

I was always contemptuous of shooting pool as a legitimate exercise. But I changed my mind after visiting a pool room in a senior citizens' center, where I learned that shooting pool, or Billiards is a first-rate exercise! Besides, shooting pool can divert your attention from worrying about the economy.
Professor of economics Kevin Sylvester talks about food prices, inflation, and what it's doing to the economy, post Covid.
Then Bob and Martia Smith tell us a about the form the Apollo Astronauts had to fill-out on their return to earth.
And we’ll examine Mark Twains alleged quote that history doesn’t repeat itself but does rhyme.
We’ll look at allergies down south and nationwide. And we’ll have some tips about how to avoid osteoporosis. Plus, Roger Ramjet tells us about a tune you might not have heard for awhile.

It's all next on OK Boomer with Robert Rickman, where we're keepin' is real!

This is an EF4 tornado that hit a suburb of Nashville, TN in 2009  I was on the air at a Nashville news station with continuous coverage of the disaster most of the next day.  It was horrible!
But as Mark Twain allegedly said, "History doesn't repeat itself, but it does rhyme!
Fourteen years later history rhymed, but not only in Tennessee.
